Personal Interests, Attitudes
and Values Assessment

Our personal values, attitudes and interests support and guide behaviors we display daily. When we are “in tune” with our values tasks are enjoyable. The reverse is true as well. When we engage in activities that contradict our values, the task becomes a difficult chore.

In order to be successful in our business organizations, we require individuals who are energized when they are participating on our teams.

Values are developed early in life by a variety of influences. As we mature, some values lock in and others do not.

This Personal Interests, Attitudes and Values (PIAV) assessment will give individuals an opportunity to identify a number of their core values. The feedback will provide information on “why” a person does what he/she does.

The PIAV contains six (6) categories. Here are some brief descriptions of each:

Theoretical:

looks for truth, desires knowledge
Utilitarian: interest in what is practical and useful
Social: sees others as a means in themselves, greater good
Aesthetic: desires harmony and inner beauty
Individualistic: sees others as a means to an end, seeks power
Traditional: looks for unity order and structure

Generally, two (2) or three (3) value categories will be dominant. The others will also factor but not with the same intensity.

It is important to understand this information because it sheds light on what makes people do what they do. Sometimes, when the motivator or motivation is clear, it is easier to understand the action or reaction of another person.

This assessment tells the “why” behind behaviors and actions and when combined with the DISC assessment (the “how”), it affords a great insight into team members. Other benefits may include:

  • A clearer idea of how to reward people
  • A better understanding of what motivates people and why
  • Help to explain why some people respond to rewards and/or recognition attempts and why some don’t.

When this information is understood among team members and by the individual him/herself greater team success is possible.

The PIAV assessment may be used in any situation where two (2) or more people are participating. Here are some groups and/or teams that could benefit from this assessment. The list is not all-inclusive.

  • Executive teams
  • Natural work teams
  • Mentors and Protégés
  • Affinity Groups
  • Diversity Councils
  • Religious groups
  • PTA/Teachers/students
  • Associations
  • Clubs
  • Counselors and Families
